The lecture-performance is part of the group exhibition On a tongue's tip, at a world’s lip

In recent years, Marianne Vlaschits has started to consistently align her artistic practice with her stutter – with the “gaps and niches, the tiny craters in my speech,” as she likes to say. Exploring, among other things, the medium of painting as a nonverbal vocalization or neologistic form of speech, she positions stuttering “not as an impediment, but as a creative force – one that can open up unexpected possibilities.”

As part of our current group exhibition On a Tongue's tip, at a world's lip, Vlaschits presents a lecture-performance that reflects on the lived experience of disfluent speech, platforming this inquiry in the context of a live moment – the ultimate sphere of potential loss of control. She notes “how certain disabled modes of speaking, like repetitions or blocks, are often used in performance or poetry by non-disabled people. They are appreciated as aesthetic elements or tools. But when talking this way ‘naturally’ or off stage, it is usually something to be corrected.” Inspired by the author Joshua St. Pierre, who connects speech-language pathology to the mechanisms of social, political, and economic control, Vlaschits seeks to make space and time for losing it.

Marianne Vlaschits (*1983 Vienna) is an artist living and working in Vienna. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and has exhibited her work internationally, including: Acceptable Paintings, Pech, Vienna (2024); Unknown Familiars, Leopold Museum, Vienna (2024); Darker, Lighter, Puffy, Flat, Kunsthalle Wien (2023); On the New, Belvedere 21, Vienna (2023). Vlaschits has received numerous awards and grants for her work, including the state scholarship by the Federal Government in Austria in 2024 and a residency at the ISCP in NYC in 2025.
