Through the lens of...

With Through the lens of…, Kunstraum Niederoesterreich invites you to experience its exhibitions from the perspective of vastly different disciplines and backgrounds. On this occasion, the molecular biologist and dancer Asmita Banerjee will guide you through our current exhibition She, Who Dwells in the Shadows. Drawing on her background in biomedical research and her many years of practice in the South Indian dance form “Bharatanāṭyam,” she will offer her personal perspective on the artistic works on display.

Curated by Kinnari Saraiya, the group show She, Who Dwells in the Shadows is dedicated to the potential of darkness and obscurity. It focuses on forms of storytelling and knowledge that exist outside official archives and are passed on through practices of narration, embodiment, and cosmological imagination. Ing.in Mag.a rer. nat. Dr.in nat. techn. Asmita Banerjee was born in Kolkata, India, and has lived in Vienna since 1976. Since 1998, she has been conducting research on tissue regeneration and cellular mechanisms at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Traumatology, a research center in cooperation with the AUVA. As a senior researcher, she is also head of the cell culture facility and coordinator for amnion research.

In addition to her scientific work, she has been a member of the Natya Mandir Dance Company under the direction of Radha Anjali since 1996. She has participated in numerous dance projects in Austria and abroad and has been teaching herself since 2002. Asmita Banerjee is also co-founder of lablife gmbh, a platform for video tutorials on best practices in life science laboratories.
