Since its founding in 2005, Kunstraum Niederoesterreich serves as a platform for the promotion, presentation, and mediation of performance art. Our public program showcases contemporary forms of live arts and performative artistic or curatorial practices, which manifest in solo presentations, exhibitions, event series, and our educational formats.

One of our primary instruments to support performance art is the H13 Lower Austria Prize for Performance, to date the only award of its kind for performance art in Austria. Announced via an open call since 2007, the prize winner is chosen each year by an alternating jury selected by the artistic director. The distinguished performance is presented to the public at the Kunstraum in the second half of the year.

Since 2007, Kunstraum Niederoesterreich awards the H13 Lower Austria Prize for Performance, to date Austria’s only prize for performance in the context of visual art. Endowed with 5.000 EUR, the ambition of the H13 Prize is to showcase the diversity and relevance of contemporary performance art and to make it accessible to a broader audience – in Austria and beyond.

The presentation of the prize-winning performance project takes place in the framework of the H13 award ceremony. An accompanying, usually two-week exhibition offers our audience an opportunity to engage with the artists’ work outside of the ceremony itself. In this way, the prize also tackles the question of how to present and document performance art in (and/or for) an exhibition context.

Prize-winners from past years: Rehema Chachage (2023), Elisabeth Kihlström and Alexander Martinz (2022), Sara Lanner (2021), Julischka Stengele (2020),Helena Eribenne (2019), Otto Krause and Milan Loviška (2018), Anna Vasof (2017), Andrea Maurer (2016), Julia Marx (2015), Barbis Ruder (2014), Peter Fritzenwallner (2013), Lilo Nein (2012), Dolce & Afghaner – Djana Covic and Fahim Amir (2011), Jakob Lena Knebl (2010), kozek hörlonski – Peter Kozek and Thomas Hörl (2009), Christian Falsnaes (2008), Roberta Lima (2007)

In 2024, Kunstraum Niederoesterreich awards the H13 Lower Austria Prize for Performance for the 18th time. With the aim to increase the international visibility of the local performance art scene and to make a lasting contribution to its promotion, the H13 Prize will be awarded again in cooperation with a renowned institution abroad: the Mudam Luxembourg. In addition to the prize money and the presentation at the Kunstraum, the winner(s) receive a multi-day, individual tutoring with Clémentine Proby, Assistant Curator at the Mudam.

The Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean (Mudam) is a museum for contemporary art in Luxembourg. As one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in Europe, the Mudam is known for its pioneering work in the field of performative practices within the museum context. The tutoring program initiated as part of the H13 Prize will include studio visits, curatorial dialogue and individually tailored offers. It is intended to provide the winner(s) the opportunity to further develop their own practice and enhance their international visibility.

As always, the call for entries is thematically open. It begins on Thu, 22.02.2024. The submission deadline is Fri, 12.04.2024. The winners will be announced mid-May.
