Subterranean
Hidden labour, hidden costs. Curated by Sarah Johanna Theurer and Aditi Kapoor, Subterranean brings into view the work that quietly sustains the (re-)production of our everyday social life. Using various narrative strategies, five artistic positions bring buried (hi)stories to light, peer into the black boxes of industry and the financial world, and explore forgotten alternatives to the regimes of productivity and competition.
Attitude Era
Fact or fake? As we know, algorithms don’t care. What matters is the effect — and that above all has to be engaging. In the group exhibition Attitude Era, co‑curated by Frederike Sperling and Pia Wamsler, the Kunstraum descends into the lowlands of the post‑truth age. Seven artistic positions illuminate the relationship between reality and fiction in times of slopaganda, deepfakes, and Trumpism.
She, Who Dwells in the Shadows
Fragile Fictions is the title of the 2026 program of the Kunstraum, which focuses on the status of the fictional in art and politics. Guest curator Kinnari Saraiya makes the start with the group exhibition She, Who Dwells in the Shadows. Fiction serves here as a way of uncovering epistemic shadow zones – from repressed collective memories and myths to forgotten blueprints for alternative worlds.
Annual program 2026: Fragile Fictions
Under this year’s guiding theme Fragile Fictions, Kunstraum Niederoesterreich focuses on the status of the fictional in art and politics: What does it mean to uphold the distinction between fiction and truth in an era of deepfakes, slopaganda, and alternative facts? How do storytelling and political imagination relate to one another? Which (future) narratives are popular at the moment and why? Besides the manipulative and demagogic aspects of fiction, the Kunstraum annual program 2026 will also explore potential emancipatory and collective forms of storytelling.

Kunstraum Niederoesterreich is a lively space for contemporary art in Vienna. Our program consists of exhibitions, performances, and discursive formats and presents the work of emerging artists based in Austria as well as international artistic positions.
