Archive: The Other is Very Close to You
Forms of encounter between contemporary art and the public. An event by public art Lower Austria in cooperation with Kunstraum Niederoesterreich.
Ideally, mediation is about bringing the Other, the unfamiliar, that which cannot be appropriated as close as possible. The discussion, an exchange of experiences among artists, scientists and academics, and recipients as well as an initiative by mediators in the current exhibition at the Kunstraum Niederoesterreich engage with issues about current art production. A public space is not restricted exclusively to its usual ascription, it can also be created by forms of participation and discussion.

Three brief lectures provide the basis for a dialogue between a curator, an art historian/mediator and an artist where the different positions held by those involved in the mediation of art are placed in relationship to one another. A historical and theory orientated view based on distance is contrasted with a view that is stems from an artist's own practice-based approach. Both are confronted with a form of mediation that, inter alia, promotes an understanding of the artist's modus operandi based on immediacy and that operates with empathy and the application of emphasis. Which instruments are suited for mediation in a context of art in public space can be reflected on within this charged arena and its various languages.
A 'mediation experiment' in the current exhibition is offered on the same evening to supplement what is gleaned from the discussion: an event about the 'in-between' role of mediation sheds light on possible positions between the art and its viewers.
