Since 2008 a team of artists and theoreticians – Markus Hanakam, Claudia Larcher, Liddy Scheffknecht, Roswitha Schuller and Armin B. Wagner – have been staging exhibitions under the name Plinque. Plinque oscillates between off space and artists’ collective. On the one hand Plinque acts like an off space, without running a permanent gallery however. Each exhibition takes place at a different venue and refers to the respective spatial circumstances. On the other hand Plinque stages alternative exhibition displays and collective artistic group interventions. Since 2008 Plinque has organised seven exhibitions in various areas and cities, such as Vienna, Tokyo, Murau (Styria) and Paris.
The “Elastic Video” show was first shown in 2011 in the institution Tokyo Wonder Site in Hongo, Tokyo. It was one of three jury-judged exhibition projects of the Emerging Artists Support Programme, an international support programme for young curators and exhibition makers.
The exhibition “Elastic Video” interrelates works that operate with an elastic concept of video. Based on the extended film practice of Expanded Cinema in the late 1960s early 1970s, video does not take place exclusively as the classical projection of a moving image but undergoes its expansion in the direction of video sculpture, site-related video montage and video installation. A theme of the selected artistic works is the field of tension from moving image to photography, the mechanics of which have a shared basis. At the same time, the media-specifics, which react reversibly to these kinds of tension, remain starting points and focuses of the artistic explorations.
For the exhibition in the Kunstraum Niederoesterreich the selection of young Austrian artists was extended to international and classical positions of media art.
