Opening Matrix Bodies

with introductory words by Frederike Sperling (new artistic director of Kunstraum Niederoesterreich and curator of the exhibition)

Matrix Bodies – a nostalgic revival of the Matrix movies from the 2000s? Unfortunately, we must disappoint you. However, like Neo, the protagonist of the film series, we would have opted for the red pill instead of the blue. With the group exhibition Matrix Bodies, we are in fact – to stick with the metaphor – also embarking on a "search for the truth" in the broadest sense.

For the narrative, which began with extractive industrialization, that humans are the radical counterpart of nature is increasingly turning out to be an illusion in the face of collapsing ecosystems, resource scarcity and pandemics. Rather, we seem to be entangled in symbiotic relationships with non-human life forms. With the artists Eglė Budvytytė, Seba Calfuqueo, Caterina Gobbi, Nona Inescu, Josèfa Ntjam and Sophie Utikal, we trace these entanglements and go to places where the boundaries between humans and nature become unstable. In the end, you get to decide for yourself: what is simulation and what is reality?

We are pleased to welcome you to the opening of the first exhibition of the 2023 annual program Sensing the Heat at Kunstraum Niederoesterreich.

...the first 50 guests can expect specially made kombucha by the Kunstraum team! Don't miss the opportunity to witness our fermenting arts.... well, or rather to critically judge them!
