In 1975, Motown legend Smokey Robinson released a song that would leave a lasting mark on the sound of R&B: Quiet Storm. Vividly and poignantly capturing the paradoxes of the erotic, he conjures a mysterious dynamic between serenity and transformation, tenderness and explosiveness: “Soft and warm, a quiet storm / Quiet as when flowers talk at break of dawn / Break of dawn / A power source of tender force”.
This “tender force”, this gentle breeze that may sometimes trigger more radical effects than a hurricane lays at the core of Soñ Gweha’s first solo exhibition in Austria, A Quiet Storm Blowin’. Inspired by Robinson’s eponymous soul classic, Soñ Gweha has conceived a lively, multisensual environment between collaborative platform, afro-queer-feminist utopia, and decolonial archive.
We warmly invite you to celebrate the opening of A Quiet Storm Blowin’ together with us.
The opening of A Quiet Storm Blowin’ takes place in cooperation with Kunsthalle Wien. On the same evening Denise Ferreira da Silva and Arjuna Neuman´s exhibition Ancestral Clouds Ancestral Claims opens at Kunsthalle Wien Karlsplatz (open doors from 7 pm, welcome and introduction at 8 pm). Afterwards, Kunstraum Niederoesterreich and Kunsthalle Wien invite you to a joint afterparty at Club U.
