Carmilla // Reading Group

with Clemens Rettenbacher

TH, 18.06.2020, 5 - 6.30 pm

Before the Irishman, Bram Stoker, relocated his novel, Dracula, to Transylvania, the first draft of his classic Gothicism took place in Styria. The local Karnburg Castle is also the setting for the story "Carmilla" by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. His female vampire figure was up to 20 years ahead of her male colleague, and was considered a prototype of the female and lesbian vampire.

On three different dates, we will read the story of the most famous undead in literary history together with Clemens Rettenbacher and discuss the female vampire figure based on the text and the topic of our exhibition DURST. Dracula embodies the superhumanly, strong and perfect antihero. Yet who was Carmilla? And what does she embody?

The Reading Group will take place online due to the measures against the spread of the corona virus, details will follow after registration.
