Artist Talk with H13 Winner Helena Eribenne

Artist Talk with H13 Winner Helena Eribenne
SAT 07 09 2019, 1:00 pm

The fictious dialogue between a female artist of Color and a white curator as seen in this year’s H13 winner Performance Woman to Woman II is now followed by a real Talk: On September 7th the H13 prizewinner Helena Eribenne will discuss her artistic work in conversation with the artist Olivia Jaques.

Born in London, Helena Eribenne has been an integral figure in the Viennese art and performance scene for years. Her works reside at the interface between theatre, performance, film, and photography and are always rooted in a sociopolitical context.
For "Woman to Woman II" she transforms the Kunstraum into a time machine to critically reflect on the contemporary representation and reception of female artists of color:

"Woman to Woman II is a throwback to 1974 with a 21st century attitude. From the visual impact of the performance, stage design and costume, what can we learn from a post-colonial perspective of black women? Is 'black art' a tradition that will not be broken with, much in keeping in line with the naked women in art spaces trope?"  (Helena Eribenne)

Olivia Jaques studied visual and media arts at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and at the Bauhaus University Weimar. She was also trained in the Feldenkrais Method. She has been teaching at the Zurich University of the Arts since 2014. Since 2016 she has also been working for artasfoundation, a Swiss foundation for art in conflict regions. Together with Marlies Surtmann she founded the performance platform Performatorium - Labor für zeitgenössische performative Praxis in 2017. She is part of the AG Performative Archive (PANCH), where she organises a series of discursive events (2017-2019) on the archiving of ephemeral arts together with Margarit von Büren, Pascale Grau, Tabea Lurk, Valerian Maly and Julia Wolf.
