In my recent book, Communal Luxury, I restage the Paris Commune for our own time as a kind of laboratory of political invention, an everyday aesthetics of process. In this talk I will discuss practical ways of being adequate to the praxis of the Commune: how to write history as akin to poesis, how to intervene directly into historical narrative to actively shift perspective through processes of reframing and juxtaposition.

Symposium "On the Division of Labour, Work, Knowledge, the Sensible, Spaces and Times"
Interdisciplinary Symposium: Workshops & Public Lectures
Vienna, 23 & 24 September 2016 (on 24 September the Symposium takes place at the Academy of fine Arts)

The symposium seeks to highlight different divisions of the fields of knowledge and art production as well as politics and wage labor, and how these divisions face a permanent process of negotiation at universities and art schools. The question of the development and the current state of the Division of Labour, of Work, of Knowledge and the Sensible, of Spaces and Times goes beyond mere theory; it also entails the practice of current divisions and partitions. In light of this we would like to give an account of the fact that political, artistic, scholarly work, labor and reproduction work/activity are very often carried out in personal union, that is to say by one and the same individual.

Without claiming that existing divisions and forms of discipline would be easy to overcome, and mindful of our privileges as knowledge workers and artists, we would like to engage with the possibilities of not being divided, partitioned and separated in such ways.

Symposium: „Zur Aufteilung von Arbeit, Tun, Wissen, des Sinnlichen, der Räume und Zeiten“:

Im Rahmen des Symposiums möchten wir nach den verschiedenen Teilungen fragen vor dem Hintergrund der spezifischen Felder von Wissens- und Kunstproduktion sowie Politik und Erwerbsarbeit, wie sie sich insbesondere auch an Universitäten und Kunsthochschulen in einem permanenten Aushandlungsprozess befinden. Die wissenschaftliche Frage nach der Entwicklung und dem gegenwärtigen Stand der Aufteilung von Arbeit, Tun, Wissen, Wahrnehmung, Räumen und Zeiten meint nicht nur die Theorie sondern auch die Praxis der sich vollziehenden Teilungen und Aufteilungen. Zudem geht uns auch um die Tatsache, dass politische, künstlerische, wissenschaftliche, lohnarbeiterische und reproduktionsspezifische Tätigkeiten häufig in Personalunion geleistet werden. Ohne anzunehmen, dass bestehende Aufteilungen und Disziplinierungen einfach zu überwinden wären und eingedenk der möglichen Privilegien von Wissensarbeiter_innen und Künstler_innen, wollen wir nach den Bedingungen und der Möglichkeit fragen, nicht so und nicht dermaßen eingeteilt zu sein.
