In the opening exhibition of the KUNST RAUM NOE the artists venture into an unknown territory by following the concept of profiling – a term originally describing a special method in criminology to zoom in on possible suspects.

In her work SELBSTZERLEGUNG [Self-Deconstruction] Andrea Maurer reacts to our current social and political situation, which in the artist’s view is ridden with crisis. Her response subjects space, objects, and language to a – at times also comical – distortion.

The exhibition THE TURN المنعرج presents several interventions that took place in public spaces in urban and rural post-revolutionary Tunisia. As expressions of socio-political issues and direct social engagement, they are rooted in the tradition of the “Social Turn” (Claire Bishop) in contemporary art history.

Codes inform society, the economy, finance, law, and politics. They facilitate social practices of digital communication and choreograph their surveillance at the same time. Their operations, however, are subject to the contingency of unexpected malfunctions. In a technological context, these defects are referred to as “glitches” (such as image distortions or computer bugs) and have been artistically interpreted in various ways since the 1960s in the spirit of an aesthetic of error.

Based on the interest in concerning themselves with non-hierarchical, self-determined possibilities of the shared knowledge and art production and with the format of the exhibition, a concept for a specific practice of exhibiting in the Kunstraum Niederoesterreich developed. A movement of positions in an already described space in which the implementation of a concept in a field of tension between individual and collaborative ways of working develops.

The participating artists produce a book together, but without an exhibition having taken place beforehand. With the artists’ book “Re-” the reference to an artistic act, its documentation in the form of a publication, takes place before the artistic act itself. The effect comes before the cause, the copy before the original, the reaction before the action. With the book, the usual causalities are reversed in order to focus on reiteration as the motor of cultural production.

What happens to performance when the spotlight of attention wanders on, when the performative act is over? What does performance enable? How does it develop further? What will we find when we investigate the spaces in-between?

And what is our motivation to lend a fragile duration to a medium whose most important quality is the brief presence in the moment it happens?

In 2005 a new art institution with a very unique profile opened its doors in the former canteen of the Lower Austrian Landhaus on Herrengasse 13. Outside of the traditional gallery scene and with its focus on emerging art, in the past ten years the Kunstraum Niederoesterreich has firmly anchored itself as an important venue in Viennese art life.

“Touch the Reality” showcases concepts and practices that transfer artistic work into a socio-political domain and how they employ an aesthetic of the performative, artivism, and the public space in the process.

How can performers link up with the preceding performance artists? How can artistic stances and processes be kept accessible for later reception? An approach takes place through indirect routes. Alongside concepts, written descriptions, photo and video material there are spatial and material changes – and that is what this year’s performance series will be concentrating on.

The Performancenight and Exhibition is Part of m e a n w h i l e...
An exhibition space has to endure a lot. There are installations and performances, exhibitions are opened, contacts made, one shows art and shows off. It is an intersection point for success and failure, excitement and boredom, favour and disfavour. The exhibition space cannot withdraw. It is an archive.

The title of the exhibition in the Kunstraum Niederoesterreich is programmatic: When thought becomes matter and matter turns into thought. Thought processes temporarily assume form and material and become the starting points for new lines of thought. An independent cosmos of works emerges in which they repeatedly refer to one another.

How might people of the 23rd century view our present-day civilisation? Might they regard us as believing in reason or see a loss of naturalness?

The crisis is not only present today – it is a constantly recurring narrative, a cyclical guest, and a messenger of social and geopolitical upheaval. It is an abstract and elusive construct that calls for reform, discipline, and struggle.

Anyone visiting the Kunstraum Niederoesterreich on 11 September 2014 will find it empty. The exhibition is open but the works are not there. Stacks of posters start off a murmur: they talk about 13 fairytale expeditions that are starting the next day. Our artists commence at various points in Lower Austria, penetrate a natural and urban thicket that they have chosen themselves, and a week later reach the Kunstraum in the heart of Vienna.
