Concept: Peter Brandlmayr

The exhibition “Contours” is dedicated to recent artistic and scientific positions concerning the character of the scientist. Artists and scientific researchers were invited to address the subject of the scientist and either produce works or make already existing works available for this exhibition.

The spectrum of the shown works ranges from an engagement with historical characters from the history of science to installations of laboratory-like constructions to sociology of science studies about the representation of scientists and researchers. The constant focus is on the paradoxical combination of characteristics attributed to researchers by the media, thereby thematically addressing common stereotypes as well as breaking them down. And finally, one finds references in the exhibition to the complex relationship between the public, the media and those practicing science themselves, a relationship in which the public identity of the scientist is formed, confirmed and modified.

The goal of this exhibition “Contours” is to stimulate a discourse, beyond the boundaries of art and science, about a character who occupies a central position in Western society.
